Art – and the ICT4EDC Project…?
Recently I read a review of an exhibition of the Danish conceptual artist Soren Dahlgaard. He had in the years 2002-04 been living and working a Maldivian island with his family in order to create a sustainable horticulture development project by means of new technology and scientific methods of cultivation. Now the vegetable project has been transformed into two parallel exhibitions in Århus, Denmark, where they form an unusual and enlightening tale that is more than just an art project. (More on the new technology art exhibition (in Danish) at http://bit.ly/fyypkz)
This “hybrid” between art and a concrete development project is very interesting and an issue, which I have given a great deal of thought during the years I have worked with development projects and communication. I find the Maldivian experiment challenging: Can conceptual art be used as a venue for communicating the very concrete and complex issues like development and aid? And would I myself be able to work simultaneously with these seemingly conflicting areas? - Which form would an art project take, reflecting the ICT4EDC Project ….?
